Nenagh Ormond RFC – Notes 7th November 2011 Senior XV NUIM Barnhall 21 Nenagh Ormond 18 Nenagh Ormond came out on the wrong side of a very close game on Saturday with the Barnhall out half kicking the winning penalty deep into injury time with the very last kick of the game. On balance, it was probably a deserved win for Barnhall who dominated almost the entire second half. The first half had been so different and Nenagh’s half time lead of 18 – 11 could, with a bit of good fortune have been a bit more. Barnhall started well and took an early three point lead from a penalty but then Nenagh started to get on top. After 15 minutes a great back move brought full back Paudie Breen came into the line at speed and he got over in the corner. While the difficult conversion was missed, shortly after Dan Fogarty kicked a good penalty to push Nenagh further ahead. Then came a great try with all of the backs involved to release Steven Carey to go under the posts. The easy conversion stretched Nenagh’s lead to 15 - 3. A penalty for Barnhall did little to stem Nenagh’s overall dominance and with the referee playing a penalty advantage Nenagh had a three man overlap out wide – unfortunately with a try for the taking the final pass was adjudged to have gone forward and the chance went a begging. The penalty was kicked to leave Nenagh with what seemed a comfortable 18 – 6 lead with half time only minutes away. From the kick off however a series of silly errors gave Barnhall a lifeline back into the game. A ball that should have been caught was dropped, a speculative hack through bounced close to the line and the covering Nenagh player was adjudged to have carried the ball over. While the resultant 5 metre scrum was initially held up the number 8 picked up at the base and went over to leave it 18 – 11 at half time. While Barnhall dominated territory and possession for the entire second half, Nenagh defended stubbornly and with 5 minutes left neither team had added to the half time score. A Nenagh player was sin binned for not rolling away at a ruck and rather than take the 3 points on offer Barnhall took a series of scrums that eventually resulted in a try right in the corner. The conversion from the touch line went straight over to tie the game. Supporters of both teams would gladly have settled for a draw but deep into injury time Nenagh’s scrum was penalized and another very difficult kick was despatched to give Barnhall the honours. One felt that Nenagh lost their shape in that second half and missed the inspiration and sense of direction that Coach Trevor Hogan would have been able to provide. Unfortunately he was detained on board a ship bound for Gaza and his influence was sadly missed. The players will be disappointed at this reversal but Barnhall are a good side who will make life difficult for most teams. In their last outing, having dominated and led all through, in a copy of Saturday’s game they were defeated by league leaders Rainey with the last kick of the game. There are a lot of games still to be played and with two home games upcoming followed by an eagerly awaited trip to Cashel. Nenagh next league fixture is at home on Nov 26th against Sunday’s Well and an opportunity to get back to winning ways and back into the hunt for promotion. Let’s hope that the hurt felt from Saturday defeat, that lessons can be learned, as for times this team are capable of playing very attractive rugby and are better than what last Saturday showed. Team: Conor Brislane, Damien Dunne, Fergal Brislane, David Walsh, Jamie Quigley, Shane O Callaghan, Darren Horan, Mike Slattery, Mike Fogarty, Dan Fogarty, Conor Whelan, Ger Harmse, Steven Carey, Ruadhri O Brien, Paudie Breen. Ladies Nenagh Ormond 10 - Tralee 39 The Nenagh ladies lost to Tralee in the third round of the All Ireland League at home on Sunday. Apparent from the strong sun it was a perfect day for the game and the Nenagh team came well prepared with a great game plan that they failed to put in to action. The home team received the kick off deep into their 22. The ball was played back and knocked on in the Nenagh 5 meter line. Nenagh held well in the scrum but at the next breakdown Nenagh were called off side at the ruck but in the advantage play crossed the line only to be held up beautifully by Denise Shouldice. Tralee took a shot at the posts from the penalty which they slotted to make it 3-nil to the visitors in the opening 5 minutes. The next 20 minutes Nenagh held Tralee well in their own half but never really looked like they were going to cross the line as Tralee defended well and kept Nenagh within their reach at all times. During this time Catherine McGill took a knock on her ankle and was replaced by Denise Shouldice who took over as scrum half and June Whelan moved into the back row. Eventually a turned over ball in a ruck gave Tralee the opportunity to run back at the home team. The visitors eventually worked their way up the field with a few easily broken and missed tackles, which eventually led to a try in the corner from some well worked offloading and changes in direction. In the last twenty minutes of the first half Nenagh continued to infringe at the side of the ruck, giving Tralee the opportunity to play back into the Nenagh half. With the Nenagh lineout faring poorly to Tralee’s and tackle’s being missed at crucial times Tralee were allowed to cross the line twice more in the first half- both times taking the full 7 points. Nenagh ended the first half under their own posts and with a score line of 22-3 to the visiting team. In the second half Nenagh seemed to raise their game slightly, defending more effectively but still infringing at ruck time. These infringements led to Tralee taking a quick tap penalty and going wide around the lacking Nenagh defence and scoring under the posts. Making it easy for them to take the full 7 points. From the pursuing kick off Nenagh let the Tralee team back into their own half, although not competing well in the air in lineouts Nenagh did well on the ground not allowing Tralee to form mauls and picking up a few scrappy balls. But again Nenaghs' ill-discipline led to a penalty in front of the posts with Tralee chose to slot for 3. Another kick off and Tralee were back with the ball and at the breakdown June Whelan bore the brunt of the infringements being yellow carded. Down to 14 players, Genavive Rowland was off for blood and Jennifer Carter had stepped in. The scores set at 32-3 to Tralee. Nenagh seemed to get a bit more aggressive and a good kick and pressure led to Nenagh having a scrum in Tralee 5. Working well across the pitch and with penalty advantage eventually Kyla Maxwell placed the ball on the whitewash for a five pointer but got injured in the process. Genavive Rowland came back on and stepped up and took the extras for the home team. Unfortunately Nenagh didn’t keep up this run and let Tralee in one more time before the full time whistle went. A poor score line of 39-10 for the Nenagh Ladies and a disappointing game. Nenagh play away to Shannon next Sunday. Team- Sarah Fallon, Gillian Ryan, Bob Ryan (C), Imelda Byrne, Niamh Hogan, Catherine McGill, Joanna Rudd, Christina Dunne, June Whelan, Kyla Maxwell, Laura Nugent, Genavive Rowland, Breda Doheny, Nikki Lillis , Sarah Lovett. Subs – Jennifer Carter, Denise Shouldice, Clodagh O’Brien. Under 19s The Nenagh Ormond U-19’s welcomed Clonmel/Carrick on Suir to New Ormond Park on Sunday to for their third league fixture of the season, and came away with a well deserved win against a much fancied side. Conditions on the day were perfect for running rugby, and the Ormond boys did not disappoint through their open style of rugby, with backs and forwards linking well to move the ball at every opportunity. The home team started strongly, and camped in the Clonmel/Carrick half for much of the first 10 minutes, and this pressure paid off when the ball was moved quickly from a ruck in the opposition 22 by scrumhalf Jack Nolan, to release his backs, and Kevin Seymour popped up wide on the left to touch down close to the posts. Daniel Guinan duly obliged with the extra’s, and Nenagh led by 7 points to nil. This was quickly followed by another well worked try when Jack Donovan (always dangerous from Full Back), got over out wide. The conversion was narrowly missed to leave the scores at 12 points to nil. Nenagh continued this pressure game throughout the remainder of the half with man of the match Kevin Keogh and Chris O’Meara carrying a lot of ball along with his forward colleagues of Paudie Bourke, Kevin O’Flaherty and Andrew Mackey, but strong defence from Clonmel/Carrick denied their every attempt. It should be noted however that Clonmel Carrick did have some opportunities also, and played with a lot of heart throughout the match, with their impressive no. 9, causing many problems through his sniping runs. Nenagh picked up where they had left off in the second half, and got the telling score 10 minutes into the half when the impressive Seymour crossed for his second try of the match. With the scores now at 17 points to nil, the home team were home and hosed, but showed a lot of maturity to close the game out and register a convincing win. With Mossy McNamara, Darragh Walsh, Cillian Buckley and Guinan a constant threat in the backs and Paddy Ryan, Con Lucey and Cian Comerford showing strongly in the forwards, further tries from Paddy Ryan and Jack Nolan (both converted by Daniel Guinan) were added in the last 20 minutes to leave the scoreline at 31 points to nil. It was a result that did not flatter the home team, as they were impressive throughout this match, but stronger challenges lay ahead in the form of Thurles/Cashel, and a final league game away to Waterpark, but a good result next weekend against Dungarvan should help to secure qualification for the next phase of the U-19 competition. Team on the day were Kevin Keogh, Chris O’Meara, Cian Comerford, Padraic Bourke, Eoin Flaherty, Paddy Ryan, Con Lucey, Kevin O’Flaherty (Captain), Kevin Seymour, Jack Nolan, Daniel Guinan, Gerard McNamara, Andrew Mackey, Jack Donovan, Cillian Buckley, Emmett Maher Under 17s The Under 17's were due to play Carrick-on-Suir this weekend in the East Munster league. Nenagh Ormond RFC – Notes 1st November 2011 To kick-start a great day in the club on Saturday last, local hero Donnacha Ryan with members of his family attended a pre-match function in the clubhouse and was delighted to be awarded with an honorary lifetime membership of the club and a photo book of memories from his world cup campaign, the photos being kindly provided by Bridget Delaney. Trevor Hogan was also presented with honorary lifetime membership of the club in recognition of his contribution to rugby at Club, Provincial and International level. It was a great day for the club to be able to honour two such accomplished local lads who are an inspiration to current and future generations of rugby players here in Nenagh and further afield. Senior XV Nenagh Ormond 40 Connemara All Blacks 15
First reading of the scoreline would suggest that this was an easy day out for Nenagh Ormond but this was a game where both teams made a huge contribution to a great game of rugby with Nenagh getting the important scores at critical times to come away with a hard earned bonus point, which could be so important come the end of the season. This win puts Nenagh in third place in the table. After a poor campaign last season Connemara have appointed former Munster, Connaught and London Wasps player Peter Bracken as head coach and came to Nenagh with a good run of form sitting just above Nenagh in the league table. Any expectations they might have had of an easy start were shattered very early when Nenagh ran the ball back straight from the kick off. Good hands from Carey and Harmse in the centre released Darren Horan up the wing. He offloaded to Paudie Breen who was held up just short and when the ball was recycled Jamie Quigley was there to crash over with less than 40 seconds gone. Dan Fogarty added the conversion to give the home team an early lead. Another Fogarty penalty was matched by a kick from the Connemara out half to leave the score at 10 – 3 with the clock approaching half time. With Connemara pressing hard for an equalizing try, Nenagh had a man yellow carded for going offside. With the extra man the All Blacks opted for a scrum five yards out. When Nenagh were penalized again they opted for another scrum with hopes of a penalty try. What happened next was a turning point in the game. Nenagh withstood the pressure, Rory O Brien emerged with the ball and following superb play from the backs Peter Hynes drew his opposing fullback and set Paudie Breen free to run in under the posts. Half time 17 – 3 when the score might have been tied. Dan Fogarty stretched Nenagh’s lead with two further penalties – one a superb effort from almost half way. Connemara showed that they were still in the game when following a few missed tackles their out half went over under the posts to leave the score 23 – 10. Another penalty from Fogarty was followed by a fine individual effort from Conor Whelan using his speed to good effect to cross the line. With 5 minutes to go Connemara crossed again and while the result was not in doubt it looked as if the fourth try might not come. Deep into injury time however, with the very last play of the game Stephen Carey broke 3 or 4 tackles to win the bonus point. Final score 40 – 15. This was a wonderful game of rugby with two fine teams going head to head. Nenagh were missing a couple through injuries but the players coming in did very well and will give the selectors some food for thought when everybody is available. Coach Trevor Hogan has done a fantastic job with the squad and must be very proud of his team. Dan Fogarty showed what a fine all round player he is becoming and his kicking statistics – 8 out of 8 on Saturday – are hugely impressive. Next week sees a trip to NUIM Barnhall and hopefully we can maintain the winning momentum as this away trip is followed by two home games.
Team: Conor Brislane, Damian Dunne, Fergal Brislane (Capt.), Shane O Callaghan, Jamie Quigley, Darren Horan, Rory O Brien, Michael Slattery, Michael Fogarty, Dan Fogarty, Paudie Breen, Gerard Harmse, Steven Carey, Conor Whelan, Peter Hynes. Under 17s Nenagh 24 - 24 Reading Abbey School
This week saw the Under 17's entertain Reading Abbey School, an English touring side. The match was played under lights on Tuesday night at Lisatunny. The game started at a high pace and Nenagh spent most of the first half in Reading's end of the pitch. Nenagh made the most of this pressure and scored three tries, two by Gavin Hayes and one By Eathon Moloney. Two conversions were also added. Reading scored two tries in the first half leaving the score at 19 - 10. The second half saw Reading raise their tempo and take the game to Nenagh.. Reading ran in another two tries in the second half to Nenagh's one, scored by Eathon Moloney. Nenagh withstood the pressure from Reading and defended well throughout the second half. The game finished in a draw a fair result all round. Aaron Mulqueen and Darragh Hassset both made their Debuts for Nenagh on the night and both acquitted themselves well. A meal was had by all in the clubhouse afterwards and was enjoyed by all. Many thanks to all parents and supporters who turned out on the night. Training on Tuesday and Friday nights at 7.30pm at Lisatunny. Important that all squad members to attend training Under 19s Our under 19s were due to play Clanwilliam on Sunday morning in Lisatunny but were awarded a walk-over. Training continues as normal this week, all squad members asked to make an effort to attend training. Seconds Nenagh seconds 8 Garryowen 30 Nenagh played host to Garryowen in the league Sunday gone. Nenagh started the game strongly and looked to have the measure of the bigger Garryowen side. Every time Garryowen tried to run the ball they were met by crunching tackles in the middle of the park. However 25 minutes into the game the visitors got a scrum on the Nenagh 5 metre line. This resulted in a pushover try. The convert was missed. Nenagh responded with a penalty of their own. Garryowen kicked two more penalties before half time to lead 11/3 going into the break. Nenagh were very unlucky to be down at half time and only for some missed penalties they could easily have been in front. However disaster struck in the first 15 minutes of the second half. Nenagh were reduced to 14 men with a man in the bin. Garryowen ran in two very soft trys. Then straight after the sin bin returned to the pitch Garryowen intercepted a ball on the half way line and scored again. This left the score 30/3.This finally sparked Nenagh into life and the remainder of the game was a joy to watch from a Nenagh perspective. Nenagh ran the ball at every opportunity and started to blow the opposition away at every breakdown. Nenagh were duly rewarded when John Coffey busted through into the 22 with one of his trade mark charges. When he was finally taken down the ball was recycled quickly and Dean Wallace put in a cross field kick for Leslie Hayes to touch down in the corner. This This was a spirited display by Nenagh and the scoreline wasn’t a true reflection on how the game went. There was some big carries in the pack by Martin Fogarty, Kevin Ryan and Josh Fletcher. In the backline Michael Walsh had an outstanding game especially as this was his first game at number 9 in the red and white. Once again training needs to improve and hopefully we will see an increase in numbers

Nenagh Ormond RFC Notes – 17th October 2011 Seniors Sligo 5 – Nenagh Ormond 9 Nenagh continued their Ulster bank league campaign with the long trip to Sligo last Saturday. The game got off to a slow start in damp conditions, the going of the Sligo pitch could be described as soft to yielding. A missed tackle in the 10 channel resulted in 5 or 6 minutes of Sligo pressure, but Nenagh defended well and eventually earned a penalty for holding on 35 metres from the Sligo posts. Dan Fogarty stepped up and his aim was true and Nenagh were 3-0 ahead. The game was reasonably disjointed at this stage but a number of interesting talking points arose before half time. After 30 minutes a good Nenagh lineout off the top eventually reached Shane O’Callaghan and a dangerous tip tackle by the Sligo centre Gavin Foley resulted in a yellow card for Foley and a penalty 40 metres out to Nenagh. Interesting, with all the commentary after the world cup semi final red card for the Welsh captain Sam Warburton, the ref chose that yellow was to be the colour on this occasion. Dan Fogarty struck the penalty very well and Nenagh had a 6-0 advantage. This was immediately followed by another unusual incident after the resulting kick off. Nenagh won possession and a box kick by Mike Fogarty and subsequent missed tackle allowed Sligo to counter attack and their Kiwi winger Daniel Hawkins jumped into a tackle with only one man to beat, in a manoeuvre normally seen in juvenile rugby by players new to the game. The referee showed him a yellow card and afterwards stated that it would have been red if he had made contact with the covering players head. Nenagh kicked the penalty to touch and had an excellent 10 yard driving maul but possession was turned over for holding on. Against 13 men you felt that Nenagh would up the pace but it was Sligo with a break by their excellent No 10 and captain Paddy Pearson almost got in but for an excellent cover tackle near the corner flag by Peter Hynes. Nenagh managed to hold out and clear their lines and the half ended with and excellent aerial catch from a Garryowen by the returning Darren Horan, but the ball was again turned over and the half time break arrived to allow Sligo regroup. The second half began with a knock on by Nenagh and from a poor box kick from the Sligo No. 9 all the Sligo forwards were offside and Dan Fogarty lined up another kick at goal. The kick was slightly short and led to some pressure in the Sligo half. After 5 minutes Nenagh went through seven phases in the Sligo twenty two and the no 13 Foley was penalised for offside when Nenagh had numbers on the right and a try looked possible. Dan Fogarty nailed the kick from twenty metres out and 15 metres to the right of the post to out Nenagh 9-0 ahead and comfortable at that stage. However, it was Sligo back to their full complement who threatened next, yet another missed first up tackle on their no. 10 led a penalty to Sligo for hands in the ruck. However, the kick nearly straight in front of the posts was missed and it was a huge let off for Nenagh. Mike Fogarty tried a quick drop off from the resultant 22 and the referee penalised him, giving a scrum to Sligo. From the resulting pressure another break by Pearson allowed Sligo left winger Robbie Keegan to score, but vitally the conversion was missed by Pearson and this was to prove crucial later. After 20 minutes and the game in the balance an up and under by Shane Quinlan was allowed to bounce by Butler, the Sligo full back and Quinlan regained possession. A couple of rucks later, unusually for him (he had another excellent game) Mike Slattery dropped the ball as he went over the line unchallenged in the left hand corner. The game was progressing in fits and starts, with errors and a lack of continuity from both teams. Nenagh had a further opportunity when a penalty from a difficult angle on the 10 metre line from Dan Fogarty hit the right hand upright. For the second game in a row the chase was poor when a ball hit the post and Sligo cleared comfortably. Perhaps something for Trevor Hogan and the management to look at for futures games. Another loose kick allowed Sligo to run the ball from their 22 and it took a top class cover tackle by Stephen Carey and later another by David Walsh on Sligo’s physically imposing Tongan no. 12 Mataele Fifita, to prevent Sligo taking the lead. After Walsh’s tackle Nenagh turned the ball over and the flying replacement prop John Coffey was felled by Fifita, in a challenge deemed high and dangerous by the referee and he awarded a penalty to Nenagh and you felt with time almost up that Nenagh would come away with the result. In a very nervous finish Sligo regained possession and a break was interrupted by some holding by Ger Harmse and the referee awarded a penalty to Sligo and a yellow card to the Nenagh man. Sligo could sniff the chance of a come from behind victory and the pressure was all on Nenagh at this stage. Nenagh defended well and had a chance to close out the game but a clearing kick by Mike Fogarty failed to find touch, allowing one last counterattack by Sligo that led to a final pass by Pearson to his winger go to ground with the line at his mercy. The final whistle blew at this stage to the delight of the team and travelling supporters. Indeed great credit must be given to those who travelled to support the team, including Tom O’Grady who travelled by train from Dublin for the game. To summarise a game that Nenagh should have won comfortably, could have been lost at the death, but as captain Fergal Brislane said afterwards perhaps a couple of years ago this game would have been lost but we came away with four points in the bag that will be vital at seasons end. Trevor Hogan will have a couple of weeks to work and a number of things, he will not be happy with some of the missed first up tackles in this game and also will need to work on our kick chase, an area that has been weak for a couple of seasons. Next up is a home match against a much improved Connemara on Saturday week, October 29th. Connemara have already won twice this season and on Saturday scored 55 points against Ards, so another difficult match is in prospect there.

Ladies Ballincollig 0 - Nenagh 17 The Nenagh ladies had a very early start on Sunday morning for a bus trip to South Cork for a 1pm kick off. Having drawn their opening League game against Galbally two weeks previous the Nenagh ladies were out for vindication. The weather was perfect for the type of rugby Nenagh play, the breeze was light, the rain held off and sun wasn’t too strong. The opening exchanges were all from Nenagh, the kick off was caught and dealt with brilliantly by their out-half, Kyla Maxwell, who returned the kick with interest. Bringing Nenagh into the Ballincollig 22. Eithne D’Arcy competed fantastically in the lineout and returned the ball to the visitors. A series of exchanges ensued with the visitors retaining possession even with the referee handing Ballincollig a penalty which remained in play and was returned to the home teams half. Within the opening 15 minutes and with work from both backs and forwards Genavive Rowland crossed the line for the opening try of the game. Maxwell easily took the extras. This was no reason to take their foot off the pedal. The rest of the first half was dominated by the Nenagh side, with Eithne D’Arcy taking every lineout ball from Ballincollig and with a few scrums taken against the head and the ball turned over in contact. Although Nenagh out powered and outrun the home team, their biggest downfall was discipline at the breakdown. But a minute to half time Nenagh were handed a penalty on the Ballincollig 22 just to the left of the posts. Maxwell pointed to the posts and slotted the ball beautifully to finish the first half 10-0 to the visitors. The second half started and Nenagh seemed to have lost their rhythm for the first 15 minutes letting the Ballincollig team have the ball and play their game. Even with good defending tackles from the Nenagh team they were worked backwards conceding a penalty and giving Ballincollig the chance to run at them. Ballincollig were awarded a scrum on the Nenagh 5 meter line, their No.8 peeled off the back, and it was down to Joanna Rudd (playing blindside Flanker) who made the try saving tackle and Kyla Maxwell that held the ball up over the line. Nenagh took the ball against the head in the awarded scrum and then started to play again. Working their way back up the pitch but again giving away unnecessary penalties at the attacking breakdown. The majority of the second half was played in the middle ground with neither team making great gains- but both working tirelessly in defence. With 20 minutes to go Paula Ryan replaced Sarah Fallon and Laura Nugent replaced Clodagh O’Brien. Not long after this Nenagh returned to the Ballincollig half and a well worked try from the hands of Sarah Lovett, Genavive Rowland and Christina Dunne lead to Rowland crossing the line and placing the ball between the posts. Maxwell slotted it between the uprights, leaving it at 17-0 to Nenagh. Soon after Christina Dunne was taken off due to injury and replaced by Sarah Fallon with 5 minutes to go. Nenagh kept the pressure on but failed to cross the line before the final whistle went. A competent performance by the Nenagh Ladies but it must be said that there were some outstanding performances from individuals, Niamh Hogan deservedly won Player of the Match for her ball carrying, robs, lineout clean up and defence. Christina Dunne and Gillian Ryan had standout performances in the forwards for their support play, ball carrying and defence. June Whelan stepped in at scrum-half and commanded and controlled the team excellently playing a huge part in the team victory. Sarah Lovett was very strong at full back under high balls and ran with speed and determination. Also a noted performance for Breda Doheny for her strong running and excellent tackles. Catherine McGill made her debut for Nenagh ladies and is an excellent addition to the squad. Well done ladies and we look forward to the next game on the 6th of November versus Tralee. Team: Sarah Fallon, Gillian Ryan, Bob Ryan (C), Imelda Byrne, Niamh Hogan, Eithne D’Arcy, Joanna Rudd, Christina Dunne, June Whelan, Kyla Maxwell, Clodagh O’Brien, Genavive Rowland, Breda Doheny, Catherine McGill, Sarah Lovett – replacements: Paula Ryan, Laura Nugent.
Under 17s Waterpark 34 – Nenagh Ormond 10 Last Sunday saw the Nenagh U 17's travel to Waterford to play Waterpark in the league. Waterpark proved to be too strong for the Nenagh team on the day and they ran in a number of tries against us. Nenagh got on the scoreboard with a penalty kick converted by Eathon Moloney. Overall Nenagh played well and refused to let the heads drop and played right up till the final whistle. Nenagh finished well with Dennis Flannery going over the line for a try right on the final whistle with the conversion being added by Eathon Moloney. Oisin Ryan and Patrick Dudziak both made their debuts for Nenagh in this game and both accounted for themselves well. Training on Tuesday and Friday nights at 7.30pm at Lisatunny. Nenagh Ormond RFC Notes 10th October 2011 Senior XV Nenagh Ormond 13 Rainey Old Boys 13
Coming away from Saturday’s game one didn’t know whether to celebrate two points gained or mourn the fact that two points had been lost. It was really one of those games that Nenagh dominated for long periods but were left hanging on at the end to retain a share of the spoils, with a Rainey team that are likely to be in the shake up for honours at the end of the season. Following last week’s eye catching performance away to Wanderers the hope was that Nenagh would continue on in the same manner but for the first 10 minutes of this game it was as if a different team were wearing the red and white than had togged out the previous week. Whether it was a carry-over from the disappointment of Ireland’s performance earlier that morning or some other reason the opening period was a catalogue of knock ons, fumbles and basic handling errors. Rainey kicked an early penalty and then scored a good try when they gathered from a poor Nenagh lineout and went over. The added points from the conversion left Rainey 10–0 ahead and home supporters wondering whether Nenagh’s early season form had been misleading. In fairness to the home team they gathered themselves well, the forwards started to get on top and after 20 minutes they were rewarded with a well struck Dan Fogarty penalty. Nenagh were now dominating and were unlucky not to cross the Rainey line on a number of occasions. The pressure eventually told and when Gerhard Harmse was just held up following another great break up the middle, Stephen Carey was there to take the offload and go over under the posts. The conversion left the teams tied at 10-10 at the break. After 55 minutes Dan Fogarty struck a superb penalty from the touchline to give Nenagh the lead for the first time and they then had opportunities to extend the lead further. Following a yellow card with 10 minutes to go however Rainey equalized and Nenagh were left hanging on at the end. In the last play of the game, a great Harmse tackle put a flying Rainey winger into touch to save the day, when it looked as if they were going to snatch all four points. Nenagh’s unbeaten home record had not been lost but both players and management know that they can play an awful lot better. Gerhard Harmse had a fine game for Nenagh repeatedly breaking tackles and setting up attacking moves. Jamie Quigley was also very prominent, carrying a lot of ball and making good ground. This result leaves Nenagh in sixth place in the table. Next weekend sees the team travel to newly promoted Sligo and a win is a must if we have any ambitions of promotion come next April. Seats still available on the Team bus for any supporters wishing to travel to Sligo on Saturday, all support welcome and very much appreciated by all. Team: Conor Brislane, Damien Dunne, Fergal Brislane (Captain), David Walsh, Jamie Quigley, Shane O Callaghan, Peter O Connor, Michael Slattery, Michael Fogarty, Dan Fogarty, Karl Mackey, Steven Carey, Gerhard Harmse, Shane Quinlan, Peter Hynes. Subs: John Coffey, Conor Whelan, Eoin Gardiner, Conor Whelan, Trevor Kenneally, Martin Fogarty. Under 17s Thurles 12 – 0 Nenagh Ormond Our U17's travelled to Thurles last Sunday morning to play their first league fixture of the season. In poor conditions the Nenagh boys denied Thurles a score through their strong defensive play even though the hosts were camped in the Nenagh 22 for most of the first half. Nenagh showed signs of improvement in the second half but two late tries, one of which was converted saw Thurles come out winners in the end. Many positives can be taken from this performance but there’s also a lot of work to be done on the training field so it is essential that all squad members turn up for training and give 100% as we have an important game away to Waterpark this Sunday. Squad: Gavin Hayes, John Healy, Denis Flannery, Michael Doigh, Daniel Purcell, Ger O’Gorman, John O’Flaherty (Capt), Peter Ryan, Darragh Hassey, Jack Molamphy, John Kennedy, Eathon Moloney, Graham White, Ger Mitchell, Calem McGrath, Killian Gleeson, Oisin Ryan, Paul White, Aaron Hayes, Aaron Mulqueen, Andrew Coffey, Under 15s Nenagh Ormond 31 - Clanwilliam 12 Our U15's were away on Sunday morning last at league fixture against Clanwilliam RFC U15, which turned out to be a very exciting affair. The Nenagh boys took a lot of early pressure from Clanwilliam but they failed to score on a number of occasions. From then on Nenagh applied the upper hand with very impressive displays from Willie Ryan, Brendan McAdams, Ian McNamara & Anthony Walsh. Those to score tries on the day were Darragh Molloy, Brendan McAdams, Willie Ryan, Ian McNamara & Anthony Walsh. Anthony Walsh kicked three convertions including one right on the touch line, which he duly converted. A lot of credit must go to their Coaches for this wonderful performance. Team:Cathal Whelan, Ian McNamara, Michael O Donoghue, Michael Gleeson, James Cantwell, Aaron Hogan, Anthony Walsh, Sean Smith, Alex Moisei, Brian Doughan, John Flannery, Jamshed Rahman.Brendan McAdams, Jonathan Noonan, Dylan Tierney,Bob Kenny, Darragh Molloy, Liam Maher, Willie Ryan, Mervyn Hayes, Tom Dooley, Harry Young, Constantin Spoiala. Under 13's Our U13's travelled to Clanwilliam and played a very close match against Clanwilliam with a score of 10 - 10. The forwards played very well with the backs doing all the scoring! The result of a draw was a fair one as both teams played well. A big Thank You to all who travelled. Under 8s, 10s & 12s The under 8s, 10s 7&12s group played in a blitz in Portumna against Portumna and Birr. A great day out was had by all. Sympathy We would like to extend our sympathy to the Whelan family, on the death of their mother Sheila Whelan, Richmond. May she rest in peace.
Wanderers 6 Nenagh Ormond 21 Saturday in Dublin 4 was intended to be a historic day for supporters of Nenagh Ormond with the team scheduled to play in the first ever All Ireland League game in the newly refurbished AVIVA stadium. To emphasize how far our club has come over the last few years, the game scheduled for the back pitch at the same time featured Landsdowne against Cork Constitution. There was a sense of disappointment therefore when the team were advised at about 1 o’clock, that because of prolonged overnight rain and because of the upcoming international soccer game, the game was being moved to Merrion Road. By 5 o’clock on Saturday evening however, this early disappointment had been totally forgotten by a performance from Nenagh Ormond that was as impressive as any display from this team over the last number of years. The long hours in training put in over the summer months were clearly evident and the stamp of new coach Trevor Hogan was all over this performance with the team showing absolute discipline and commitment as well as playing some excellent rugby. Conditions at the outset were not ideal but Nenagh were on top from the very start and Dan Fogarty showed Ronan O Gara type consistency with his kicking to give Nenagh a well merited 6-0 lead after 15 minutes. A penalty to Wanderers was followed by a fine back movement when the ball was moved quickly from a lineout, through three or four pairs of hands and ended with Shane Quinlan showing a clean pair of hells to dive over in the corner. This left the half time score at 11-6. Nenagh’s forwards had done very well in the first half but they took over completely in the second half. Time after time they drove Wanderers back yards and following a series of scrums on the Wanderers line the referee had no option but to award a penalty try as their scrum buckled and retreated at a rate of knots. The conversion and a further Dan Fogarty penalty left Nenagh comfortable winners on a 21-6 scoreline. It’s difficult to single out one player after such a fine team performance but, similar to Ireland, the unsung heroes in the front row were exceptional and back row Anthony Gray was outstanding. In the back line Ger Harmse had a huge game and carried the hard yards aswell as being very solid in defence, overall the Nenagh defence was magnificent on Saturday. It was fantastic to see the number of supporters who were there to support the team and both the team and management couldn’t but have been lifted and encouraged by the large vocal support who travelled to cheer them on and who far outnumbered the local fans. To everybody who made the trip, on behalf of the team, team management, club officials and committee we would like to say Thank You and well done to you all. Team: Conor Brislane, Damien Dunne, Fergal Brislane (Captain), David Walsh, Jamie Quigley, Shane O Callaghan, Anthony Gray, Michael Fogarty, Dan Fogarty, Karl Mackey, Steven Carey, Gerard Harmes, Shane Quinlan, Peter Hynes. Subs: John Coffey, Conor Whelan, Peter O Connor, Conor Whelan, Trevor Kenneally, Martin Fogarty.
Next Saturday sees the first home game of the season when Rainey Old Boys visit Nenagh. Rainey have never beaten Nenagh since they were promoted to senior ranks and will be determined to reverse that record next weekend. They have had a great start to their own league campaign and after the first series of games sit on top of Division 2B. Hopefully a large crowd will come out on Saturday to see what should be a great game of rugby. We are also offering a special ‘Match & Meal’ deal which includes entry to match plus Lunch and Beverage for €15, anybody interested should contact Philip Talbot on 067 32550 or any committee member before Friday to book.
Seconds On Sunday last Nenagh seconds travelled into Limerick for their second league game of the season against Thomond. The first half was an evenly contested affair and looked like ending 0/0 only for Thomond to score a penalty and try in the last two minutes of the half. The conversion was missed to leave the score 8/0. The second half started brightly for Thomond and they went over for a converted try. Nenagh began to up the tempo of the game and began to attack Thomond from all angles. They were duly rewarded when John Coffey crashed over for a well worked try. Trevor Kenneally kicked the conversion and soon after added a further 3 points to leave the score 15/10.Nenagh were by far the better team now and it looked as if they were going to pull this game out of the bag. However disaster struck as Thomond took a quick lineout. The scrum half gathered the ball, kicked ahead and raced on to get the touchdown. Nenagh will feel very aggrieved at this try as the Nenagh covering defender was pushed from behind as he raced back for the ball. This was spotted by everybody except the man that counts, the referee. With five minutes left on the clock Nenagh threw everything they had at Thomond but alas the final score finished 22/10. Despite the loss this was a much improved performance on the previous week. Scrums, lineouts and discipline were much better. All in all each member of the pack had a fine game and never gave up right up to the final whistle. While there is no doubt of the talent we possess in the backs it was some silly handling errors that cost us more points on the score board. So if we can get both the backs and the forwards to perform to their ability on the same day this team can look forward to the games ahead and they will no doubt turn these defeats into wins.
TEAM: John Coffey, Peter o Connor, Paudi Maxwell, Cathal Donovan, Kevin o Gorman, Josh Fletcher, Kevin Ryan, Martin Fogarty, Sean Fogarty, Trevor Kenneally, Sean White, Conor Whelan, Bruce Hayes, John Long, Tommy Connors, Paul o Meara, Aaron Nevin.
Underage Rugby
Under 17s Last Sunday saw the Nenagh U 17's have their first outing for the 2011/12 season playing Roscrea RFC in a friendly. Both teams showed signs of cobwebs and lack of game time in the first half with some ball handling errors and missed tackles. Roscrea were first on the scoreboard with an unconverted try. Nenagh responded well in the second half and with good combination and playing between the back and forwards. This saw Paul White go over for Nenaghs first try. Roscrea scored another two tries before John O'Flaherty made a great run and touched down for Nenaghs second try. Overall Nenagh played well but lack of game time was a factor. Next Sunday we open our East Munster league campaign against Thurles. Training on Tuesday and Friday nights at 7.30pm at Lisatunny. Important that all squad members to attend training.
