Underage Update 7th December 2008

Under 18s

This week’s under 18s match was cancelled as Clanwilliam were unable to field a team.  Nenagh were therefore awarded

a 'walkover'.

Under 16 East Munster League

Nenagh Ormond 46 Dungarvan 12

The Nenagh U16 team had a welcome return to form last weekend in an entertaining game against a spirited Dungarvan side.

Nenagh were very quickly on the score sheet, when from the kick off the ball was moved wide and the impressive Cathal Carey

outsprinted the Dungarvan defence to score in the corner. Nenagh’s ability to move the ball wide at pace was a feature of the

game and they proceeded to score 6 additional tries during the first half. There were some memorable scores from both forwards

and backs , one in particular from Arron Nevin is worth mentioning where, he showed great judgement close to the line to score

in a manner reminiscent of the many scored by his uncle in the past. To their credit the Dungarvan team continued to take the game

to Nenagh and got in for two scores either side of half time, the final word however rested with the Nenagh men when Captain Ronan

Murray crossed near the posts to close out the game in the final quarter. Overall a very impressive and entertaining game from the

Nenagh side, however they need to bring a higher level of consistency to their performances if they are to deliver silverware this year.

Team R Hayes, T McNamara, K Keogh, C Whelan, C Gleeson, D White, K Seymour, R Murray, A Nevin, D Quinn, M McNamara,

K Kennedy, C Carey, E Darcy, A Collins, K Flaherty, J Flaherty, B Sherlock, D Cottam, A Cummane, D Walsh, E Maher.

The under 13s played Scariff last weekend.  Nenagh won 25 – 7

The under 14s game against Thurles which was to be played on Sunday morning last was called off due to the pitch being unplayable.

The under 16s are away to Thurles on Sunday next and the under 13s are away to Kilkeacle, also on Sunday

Underage Update 22nd November 2008

Under 18s

Cashel - 10    Nenagh Ormond - 20

Nenagh continued their winning ways with a hard-fought victory away to Cashel in the east Munster League on Sunday last.

Nenagh started brightly but Cashel were the first to score with a breakaway try following sustained Nenagh pressure. This was converted,

and followed immediately by a penalty. Nenagh replied with a good try from Sean Hayes, to leave the score at 10 - 5 to the hosts at the break.

Nenagh upped the tempo after the interval and scored further tries through David Cleary and Rory Whelan (2) to run out winners in the end.

Best for Nenagh were Sean Hayes, Damian Cahalan (Captain), Keith Purcell and Rory Whelan who really stamped his class on the game

when introduced as a sub in the second half.

UNDER 16's

Cashel - 14    Nenagh Ormond - 7

Nenagh went down to their second League defeat against Cashel on Sunday last.

In a game played in driving wind and rain, Nenagh took the game to the hosts, but were unlucky to ship two soft tries against the run of play.

Nenagh did score a fine try through Cathal Carey but this was not enough on the day.

This young team is showing great potential, and will improve through some hard work on the training field in the next few weeks.

Next Sunday's home fixture against Kilfeakle, the only unbeaten team in the group, takes on greater significance now.

All support welcome

Under 14s

Under 14s travelled to Clonmel on Sunday last and were beaten 20 – 10 in the East Munster Cup.

This week they play Kilfeakle at home, kick-off 11am on Sunday morning

Under 13s

Under 13s were away to Carrig-on-Suir on Sunday last and came away winners.  Well done to all.

Under 8s & 10s & 12s

The under 12s had a great day out in Croke Park on Saturday when they attended the Ireland V Argentina game which of course had the

added attraction of a Nenagh man in the squad.

Nenagh hosted the under 8s, 10s and 12s from UL Bohs and Kilfeakle in a Blitz on Sunday morning last.  Next week’s fixture will be

notified at training during the week.

Underage Update 15th November 2008

UNDER 18's:

Waterpark - 10 Nenagh Ormond - 13 (East Munster League)

Nenagh made the long journey to Waterford city on Sunday to play their old rivals Waterpark RFC in their fourth league outing of the

current campaign, and came away with a well deserved win on a scoreline of 13 points to 10.

Nenagh started strongly from the off, and sustained pressure saw them take an early lead through a well struck penalty from their outhalf

Dean Wallace. The team continued this pressure rugby both in attack and defence, spending most of the first twenty minutes in the Waterpark

half. They were soon rewarded with a try from John O’Dowd, with the conversion attempt just coming back off the crossbar. At this stage,

Nenagh were in complete control, and were bossing the game, led from the front by an immense physical display from the pack, and controlled

defence from the backline. Another strong drive which saw excellent interplay between the backs and forwards, saw Sean Hayes get over for

Nenagh’s second try with about 10 minutes to go in the first half, which had Nenagh smelling victory. But credit to this great Waterpark team,

they rallied late on in the first half to score a try of their own, to leave the scores 13 – 5 at half time.

As expected, Waterpark came out with all guns blazing at the start of the second half as they did not want to see their proud home record broken

by the team from Tipperary. But Nenagh matched them on all fronts, and had the chance to extend the lead within the first five minutes of the new

half when awarded a penalty in front of the posts. Instead they spurned this opportunity, and went for the killer try, but were held up just short

by resolute Waterpark defending. The remainder of the game was a hard fought battle around midfield, with the Nenagh defence standing strong

throughout. Just on the stroke of full time, Waterpark got in at the corner for the last score of the game, and with the conversion missed, the

referee blew for full time, much to the delight of the Nenagh players and management.

For those not  in attendance at this fine match, it has to be said, that this was one of the best performances by our U-18’s, in the two years

that the management team have been in place, and it is extremely difficult to pick out any players individually, for this was truly a complete

team performance from 1 to 19. The team have now set a standard which they must work hard to maintain for the remainder of the season,

and if they can do so, there is not doubt that there is silverware on the horizon, to add the East Munster cup which they lifted last season.

The team on the day for Nenagh were as follows;
Forwards – Kieran Mc Cann, Keith Purcell, Adrian Lewis, Padraig Maxwell, Kevin O’Gorman, Andrew Kelly, Ritchie Nevin, Cathal Donovan,

Damian Cahalan (Capt.), Rory Whelan and Eddie Gleeson
Backs - Fergal Hayes, Sean Fogarty, Dean Wallace, John O’Dowd, David Cleary, James Holland, Sean Hayes and Michael Long

We are away to Cashel RFC next weekend, and training continues as normal in Tyone each Friday night at 7.30.

UNDER 16's:

Waterpark - 17 Nenagh Ormond - 12 (East Munster League)

Nenagh made the long trip to Waterford on Sunday morning and were very unlucky not to take the spoils in this closely fought encounter.

On a pitch where the wind and the hill favored Nenagh in the first half , the Ormond’s were quickly into their stride and were rewarded after

5 minutes when Kevin Keogh forced his way over from a ruck close to the Waterpark line. Nenagh were well on top in the first quarter with

the forwards producing their best display so far this season and the backs running the ball at every opportunity. Darragh Quinn added another

try at the mid way point of the half after a clever chip and winning the race for the touchdown. With the successful conversion Nenagh led 12-0

and Waterpark were in disarray. However the home side gained territory in the second quarter and after Nenagh had failed to clear their lines,

they were rewarded with a penalty which was duly converted and left the score 12-3 to Nenagh at the break.

Waterford took the game to Nenagh in the third quarter and scored two quick tries to leave the score 17-12 with 15 minutes remaining. At this

point Nenagh re asserted but despite good territory and ample possession they could not penetrate the Waterpark defense for the equalizing score.

Overall this was a very promising performance by a talented U 16 squad, which if built upon will ensure Nenagh will be involved in the knockout

stages of the competition.

PANEL: R Cooney, T McNamara, K Keogh, C Gleeson, C Whelan, D White, K Seymour, R Murray, A Nevin, A Collins, G McNamara,

D Quinn, E Darcy, S Kennedy, D Walsh, B Sherlock, K O’Flaherty, K Kennedy, R Hayes, A Cummane, M Tuite, J O Flaherty, D Cottam, E Maher.

UNDER 14's:

Nenagh Ormond - 5 Fethard - 7 (East Munster League)

Nenagh were unlucky to lose to a strong Fethard side at home on Sunday last. The weather conditions had a big impact on proceedings. Nenagh's

try was scored by Jonathan Hayes from a drive by the forwards.

Next week sees us away to Clonmel in the League. It is hoped to have a Friendly for the Under 13's also - more details at training.

UNDER 8s, 10s AND 12s

Our Mini Section travelled to Thomond RFC on Sunday last and gave a great display of rugby in each grade.  Next weekend they will be at home to

UL Bohemians on Sunday morning in Lisatunny.  Kick-off times will be confirmed at training.

Underage Update 2nd November 2008

Nenagh Ormond Mini Section

The Under 8 & Under 10 teams travelled to Cashel RFC on Sunday last.  All played very well and had a great run out.

The U12 teams travelled to Young Munster's RFC and played in a Blitz which included, Young Munster's RFC,

St.Sennans RFC &  Estuary RFC.  Nenagh Ormond won all their games. Well done to all.

The under 8s, 10s and 12s play UL Bohemians at home at Ormond Park on Sunday morning  next 9th November

Please check start times with coaches at training.

Under 13's:

Cashel - 0 Nenagh Ormond – 26

Nenagh produced a confident display to run out comfortable winners against Cashel on Sunday last.

Nenagh scored two tries in each half through Daniel Purcell and Aaron Hayes in the first half and

Joseph Knight and Killian Gleeson in the second. Killian was also successful with three conversations.

This was a very good display from Nenagh and all the team played well on the day.

Next week the attention switches to the Under 14's who have a home League game against Kilfeakle.

Under 16's:

Bruff - 25 Nenagh Ormond - 10
Nenagh were beaten 5 tries to two in a very entertaining friendly against Bruff, played in county Limerick on

Sunday last. This game was contested by two evenly matched sides however Bruff’s better use of possession

and control of territory won out on the day.  Bruff lead by 2 ties to nil at half time after dominating the first half

hour of play.  They dominated territory during this period with their pressure eventually telling with two scores

late in the half.

The second half was a more open game with Nenagh conceding an early try, but then responding with two well

taken scores by Cronan Gleeson and Thomas McNamara. However Bruff finished the stronger with some

dubious refereeing decisions allowing them in for two late scores.

Overall this was an entertaining game but Nenagh have a lot to work on before taking the field against Kilfeakle

in next week’s fourth round league encounter.

Under 18's:

Nenagh Ormond  - 17 Kilfeakle - 14

Nenaghs U-18 League campaign continued with a home game to Kilfeacle on Sunday.  This was a thrilling match

which finished with a scoreline of 17 points to 14, in favour of the home team.

Nenagh started well, with the pack exerting early pressure in the ruck and at lineouts. Damien Cahalan and Rory

Whelan (our Munster representatives) led the way with some storming runs which saw the Kilfeacle defence on the

back foot for much of the first half. The pressure paid off after 10 minutes when Whelan got in for a try, to give the

home team a 5 nil lead. With their heads in front, Nenagh now began to spread the ball wide, and continued their

good form with some great offloading between backs and forwards. Continued pressure saw Nenagh play much of

the first half in the Kilfeacle half, and they were rewarded with a second try after 25 minutes when Dean Wallace got

over for a try, which he then converted from a difficult angle. At 12 nil behind, Kilfeacle were spurred into action, and

played some good rugby for the last 10 minutes of the half. Nenagh defended well, with Sean Hayes in particular putting

in some crunching tackles, ably assisted in the backline by Sean Fogarty, John O’Dowd, James Holland and Michael

Long. However, Kilfeacle’s pressure paid off, when they got in for a try just before the break to leave the scores 12 points

to 7 at half time.

Nenagh again started the second half well, with Dean Wallace and Fergal Hayes kicking well for field position. The backs

and forwards then capitalized on this by mounting attack after attack on the Kilfeacle line. This sustained pressure eventually

paid off when the home team got over for another try from Paudie Maxwell. As the game drew to a close, and concentration

levels dropped a little, Kilfeacle got over fro a converted try from a quick tap penalty, which left the scores at 17 – 14, with

4 minutes remaining. Nenagh regained their composure, and a strong defensive display ensured that the points were secured.
