Nenagh Ormond U16 49 Kilfeacle and District U16 24

Nenagh Ormond under 16s entertained Kilfeacle and District RFC on Sunday last. Despite all the heavy rain during the week conditions were dry and made way for an entertaining game of rugby. From the very start Kilfeacle were really up for this game, scoring their first try after only 3 minutes through their pack where they had some very strong ball carriers. That try seemed to spur Nenagh on, and they retrieved the ball back quickly after kicking the drop off. After a number of phases Nenagh were awarded a penalty 10 yards out and, after some clever work by Shaun Murphy and Aidan Steed, Marcus Finn sniped over from the base of a ruck and scored Nenagh first try to tie up the game. Shortly after, Cody O Connor got his first try down the blind side spotting a gap and running against the grain to score in the corner.  Nenagh kept that momentum going and found themselves with a scrum just outside the 22. Cody O’Connor cleverly wrapped around after passing and on retrieving the ball spotted a gap and beat the last defender to score. Nenagh scored again soon after when Tommy Powell, who had his best game to date for Nenagh, chased a kick down, tackled the opposing player, dislodged the ball and retrieved it and on being tackled himself offloaded to Cody O Connor to score.  Kilfeacle scored next with a fine forwards try, their big ball carriers made good yards and eventually got over the line after very effective ball retention.

Nenagh kicked off the second half and seemed to have a pep in their step in defence as Kilfeacle’s big ball carriers were being brought to ground by chopping tackles. From a lineout just outside the 22 the ball was moved wide making its way to Aron Griffin who put Cody O’Connor away to score his fourth try. Kilfeacle came back at Nenagh again and their outside centre scored a brilliant try with a chip and chase. At this stage Nenagh emptied the bench and seemed to get good impact from all the players. Harry Walsh finished off a good backline move and on the other wing Tommy Powell collected a cross-field kick to score brilliantly in the corner. Aron Griffin scored our last try, a carbon copy of one he scored the previous week, when he collected a pass and beat 3 defenders to get the try. Kilfeacle never gave up and were rewarded with the last try of the game under the posts. The final score was 49-24. It was a very entertaining game with both teams contributing to a real tussle and the ref let the game flow as best he could to facilitate that. Training continues Wednesdays and Fridays.
